Buy-Give-Get Backpacks for Children in Need

Our summertime Buy-Give-Get backpack program, in partnership with USA Veterans and Military Support Foundation is made possible in part by our generous customers through their in-store and online donations. Since the program’s inception, over 200,000 backpacks have been donated to children in need, including children of military families. In 2023, in just 15 short days our customers purchased nearly 35,000 backpacks to be donated to support children in need. Since the program’s inception, this is the fastest one of our Buy-Give-Get programs has ever concluded! In 2022, our Ocean State Job Lot summer interns gathered at our headquarters in North Kingstown, Rhode Island to help fill 1,500 backpacks with donated school supplies. From there, nearly 34,000 filled backpacks were distributed to children across all nine states where Ocean State Job Lot stores are located in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Our Buy-Give-Get Programs

At Ocean State Job Lot, one way we honor our veteran and military families is through our Buy-Give-Get bikes, coats, and backpacks programs. Through our Buy-Give-Get programs, our customers play a pivotal role when they give back to those in need. When a customer buys a bike, warm winter coat or a new backpack, they receive a Crazy Deal Gift Card in exchange for the price of the item – essentially making the donation free. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

Buy-Give-Get Bikes

We are helping children of military families enjoy the simple pleasure of riding a bike. Ocean State Job Lot is thankful for our loyal customers, who helped us with our first ever Buy-Give-Get bikes program. Through their generosity, we are able to put smiles on kids’ faces by providing 1,800 bikes to children of military families across the Northeast. Thanks to our customers and our partners at American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, USA Veterans, and other veteran services, we are able to distribute the bikes to military families.

In just 9 days, our customers purchased 1,800 bikes for children of military families! We will donate some of the bikes at an event called Vets Fest in Philadelphia, PA, where thousands of veterans will be on hand. We will also be donating bikes to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC, for children of recovering veterans.

Buy-Give-Get Coats for Veterans in Need

Northeast winters can be harsh and bitterly cold, and the need for warm winter coats continues to be great.

On October 23, 2023, Officers from the Westerly, Rhode Island Police Department stopped by the Westerly Ocean State Job Lot store and purchased 34 Buy-Give-Get coats for the community. The officers used the gift cards they received for the donation for their annual toy drive to help families in Westerly.

On November 16, 2023, we partnered with Massachusetts Military Support Foundation for their annual Coats4Vets program at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Four thousand winter coats were distributed to Massachusetts State Police, and local police departments, including Foxborough Police and Fire Departments, to assist their communities.
Earlier that same month, we handed out 700 coats in Lewiston, Maine, to assist veterans and their families in partnership with Disabled American Veterans and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter.

On November 18, 2023, a tractor-trailer filled with Buy-Give-Get coats went to local veterans and families in need at the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in partnership with Project Freedom Villages.

  • In 2023, our giving efforts began earlier than ever – delivering over 50,000 warm winter coats to veterans at the beginning of fall, so they were prepared for the colder winter months ahead.
  • In 2022, we worked alongside our customers to donate more coats than ever before: 50,000 warm winter coats for veterans in the Northeast.
  • In 2021, we increased our giving from the previous year by 5,500 coats, totaling 47,500.
