"Recruiting can be lough," said Crimson Tide head coach Gene Stallings. "If you make too many mistakes, you change your place of residence." Stallings voiced his opposition to the Southeastern Conference's expansion, to any type of playoff system in college football, and to freshmen being eligible to play. But he was very much for the athletic dormitories, which have come under fire in last couple of years. "I'm for it 1,000 percent," stated Stallings. "A lot of time they are the only homes those kids have.

You lake an inner-city kid and take him far from home and this way you can make sure he eats properly. We also have supervised study in our dorm. If we're spread out in 18 different areas, that would be impossible. The people that oppose them arc the people that don't have them." Finally, in a surprising statement that sounded hauntingly familiar to Brian Bosworth, Stallings began to answer a question about the NCAA, but stopped himself. "Those people in Kansas Oh, you don't want to know what I think about them," said Stallings.

"That's communism." Dallas County head coach Don Nelson, as a result of his Hornets capturing the Class 3A state championship, has been selected to serve as a coach in the Shriners Classic. Kicker Kevin Butler has an injured shoulder but he's expected to play against the Buccaneers on Sunday. Mike Tomczak, who has a heel injury, replaces Harbaugh, with rookie Peter Tom Willis as the new No. 2 quarterback. "The thing with Neal just came up," Ditka said.

"We thought he was OK Monday. We took some X-rays because he woke up in a tremendous amount of pain. He has a cracked rib again. I think it is a different one than he had earlier in CHICAGO (AP) It's been all bad news for the Chicago Bears since they clinched the NFC Central title. Just a few weeks ago, the Bears were roaring toward the playoffs with a 9-1 record.

Then everything went bad three losses in the last four games and regular-season ending injuries to quarterback Jim Harbaugh and Pro Bowl running back Neal Anderson. Anderson, with a cracked rib, is the latest casualty. The NFC's third leading rusher (1,010 yards), who also has 13 touchdowns, is expected to miss the Bears' final two games against Tampa Bay and Kansas City, coach Mike Ditka said. Harbaugh is out with a separated shoulder suffered in the Bears' 38-21 loss to the Detroit Lions. He is expected to miss the Chicago's first the season.

He hurt it on a block. "I'm not going to risk him with a rib injury." Ditka said he'd also hold Anderson out of the regular-season finale if there arc any questions about his health. Anderson also cracked a rib in September. "If he has to sit out the following week, he'll be ready for the playoffs," Ditka said. "It is a tough situation for us.

Ditka said Mark Green and Johnny Bailey will at Anderson's position. Anderson, who has rushed for 1,010 yards this season, also cracked a rib in September. There is some good news for the Bears. They may be 10-4, but are 6-0 at home, where they'll play the Bucs and close out with the Chiefs the following week. Hoosiers to start redshirt freshman quarterback against in Peach Bowl BLOOMINGTON, Ind.

(AP) Indiana coach Bill Mallory said Thursday that red-shirt sophom*ore Trent Green will start at quarterback when the Hoosiers play Auburn in Peach Bowl on Dec. 29 in Atlanta. "He's looking forward to the opportunity to get out there and start," Mallory said. "He's looked good in practice. "This doesn't mean that (Chris) Dyer won't play, but I'm giving Green the nod.

"I feel that Green needs to have the opportunity to get out there and go. He's looking good in practice. I don't think Dyer came on like I'd hoped and I'nrgiving Trent a chance to get back and get reestablished." Green started the Hoosiers' first seven games, including the first five when Indiana posted a 4-0-1 record. He completed 50 of 109 passes for 835 yards, with seven interceptions and four touchdowns. Dyer started the last four games, completing 51 of 102 passes for 701 yards, six interceptions and three touchdowns.

The Hoosiers' 6-4-1 season in many respects mirrored the play of experience and I think he's gained that. He's going to develop into a good quarterback." White threw for 2,242 yards, completing 180 of his 338 attempts. He had 14 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. Indiana has been working out for the past week to get ready for the bowl game, its first since going to the Liberty Bowl in 1988. Mallory said he hasn't changed his approach to post-season games.

"I think we'll work out just like we have been, but I'm not going to make a point of just beating the heck out of them," he said. "We'll just work and try to make an improvement. I think we want to make sure we're hitting all phases of the game." He also said that he plans to concentrate on helping the younger players. "We need to work in a steady and consistent fashion and keep the tempo up." A victory, he said, "boils down to the soundness factor. Whoever eliminates mistakes that could hurt you.

That's really what it boils down to." back." Offensively the Hoosiers will be depending upon junior tailback Vaughn Dunbar, who rushed for 1,143 yards on 229 carriers, for a 5.0-yard average. "He's certainly learned and made improvement," Mallory said. "He's a young man with potential. But he's not yet where he can be. "He's been getting better as the season progressed.

He's one of the toughest running backs in the country." Auburn (7-4) poses a major test for Mallory's Hoosiers. "Auburn has an excellent defense, as good as we've every faced," he said. "They're a very physical defense. I think they have a good offense too. I think we've faced better, but they're very good." He added, "I think that the best offense we've faced is Michigan, but I think that they have a good balance like Michigan had, although Michigan has more experience." Auburn quarterback Stan White "is young man with a lot of potential," Mallory said.

"He's had good moments and some bad moments. Being a quarterback takes their quarterbacks. "We were a young team going into the season," Mallory said. "We had some question marks. You can never project what you're going to do.

You can just hope you're going to have a winning season. "We had a strong start, then we hit a lull and that was disappointing. It was a season of some highs and lows. But you have to expect that when you have a young team. We at some time lacked maturity.

I sure wish we could have cut some of those mistakes out. That was kind of irking. "You just try to survive and get Christmas Show Koko Grimes (left) and Minge Wood perform their gymnastics stunts during the YMCA Christmas Show Thursday night..
